Charlotte Toke

Charlotte was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey and lived in Garwood, Union and Elizabeth before moving to Carteret in December 1959.  She graduated from Carteret High School in 1968 and graduated from the College of St. Elizabeth, Convent Station (Morristown), New Jersey with a B.A. in Elementary Education in 1972.

After graduation, Charlotte taught 4th grade for one year at St. Joseph School in Carteret, then 4th and 5th grade English and social studies at Holy Trinity Elementary School in Westfield for two years.  She was a substitute teacher with Carteret Public Schools for one year before taking a “temporary” position at Rutgers University Libraries.  Charlotte has held that “temporary” position for thirty-one years.

At Rutgers University Libraries, Charlotte is a “special formats cataloger” responsible for ordering, receiving and cataloging musical scores and sound recordings (LPs, CDs, cassettes).  She also catalogs electronic resources i.e. CD-ROMs, electronic books, websites and, when the system is up and running, she will catalog electronic theses and dissertations in addition to print theses and dissertations.  In addition to her full-time employment at Rutgers, Charlotte works part-time at the Woodbridge Wegmans.

Charlotte and her husband of 26 years, Alan, have two daughters. Helen is a nurse at Raritan Bay Medical Center, Perth Amboy and is married to Michael who works for the NBA. They have a six-month-old daughter, Olivia Noelle.  Their younger daughter, Alicia, is finishing her junior year at St. Andrews Presbyterian College, Laurinburg, NC where she is an English major with a minor in music.  Alicia has recently been selected as editor-in-chief of the college newspaper, The Lance and has received the Distinguished Journalist Award.

Charlotte participated in the TOPOFF 3 exercise held at the Rutgers Athletic Center as a “role player,” and wanted to know how she could become more involved in similar exercises and possible emergencies. She received her C.E.R.T. training at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, and is now involved with C.E.R.T. both at Rutgers and in Woodbridge.  She holds the Healthcare Provider level certification in CPR, and is trained in the use of the Automated External Defibrillator (AED).  Charlotte is fluent in sign language, specifically signed English (as opposed to ASL) and in the use of tactile sign language.

She is an Elder at First Presbyterian Church, Carteret, NJ and sings in the choir.  She is also on the nominating committees for both the Presbytery of Elizabeth and the Synod of the Northeast.  She has served as chair of the Evangelism and Church Growth Unit of the Presbytery of Elizabeth and has also chaired the Pastoral Nominating Committee for First Presbyterian Church, Carteret.

Charlotte is a lifetime member of the Girl Scouts of America and has served as leader, co-leader and service unit membership registrar.
